Couples ask me this more than anything except price. The honest answer: Colorado has three elopement seasons worth planning around, and each rewards different couples.
Late June – August: high summer
The high country opens — passes melt out, trails clear, and mid-July brings the wildflower show (Yankee Boy Basin above Ouray is the famous one). The catch: monsoon season. July and August afternoons build storms almost on schedule, which is why I plan vows for sunrise or early morning, always. Crowds peak too — another argument for dawn.
Mid-September – early October: the gold rush
The last week of September is the most requested week on my calendar and it earns the hype: entire aspen hillsides turn gold, storms fade, light softens. Red Mountain Pass, Boreas Pass, and the drive into Dunton are at their absolute peak. Book 12+ months ahead for these dates — vendors and permits both.
November – April: winter, criminally underrated
Snow-covered ceremonies with nobody else on the trail. Ski-town elopements in Telluride and Breckenridge, Sprague Lake nearly private in RMNP, and vendor availability everywhere. The requirements: flexible plans (weather moves days around), 4WD, and a coat you'll actually wear. Winter films have an intimacy summer can't fake.
May – early June: the honest warning
Colorado's trickiest window. High passes are still snowed in, trails are mud, and runoff swells creeks. Valley and desert locations work (Moab is glorious in May); alpine lakes mostly don't. If your heart is set on high country, wait for late June.
Month by month, fast
Jan–Mar: deep winter, ski towns, total quiet. Apr: desert season — Moab. May: valleys and Moab; avoid high passes. Jun: late month opens the alpine. Jul: wildflowers + morning ceremonies. Aug: high summer, plan around monsoons. Sep: gold — book a year out. Oct: early month rides the tail of the color. Nov–Dec: first snows, moody and empty.
