Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement Guide: Sites, Permits & Timing

Mountain wedding film still

Rocky Mountain National Park is where most Colorado elopement dreams start — and where most planning confusion lives, because RMNP runs the most structured wedding system of any location in the state. Structured is good news once you understand it: the rules are clear, the sites are proven, and the park handles crowds better than free-for-all locations.

The system, in one paragraph

Every ceremony needs a special-use permit tied to a designated ceremony site, each with its own group-size cap. In peak season, timed-entry reservations stack on top for you and your guests. Drones are banned parkwide. Apply months ahead for summer and fall dates, and verify current fees and rules on the park's site — they evolve.

The sites, compared honestly

Sprague Lake — the crown jewel for most couples: an accessible boardwalk, mirror reflections of the Continental Divide, and wheelchair-friendly access that makes it the best choice when grandparents are coming. 3M Curve — the sunrise classic on the Bear Lake road; small, roadside, spectacular dawn light. Moraine Park & Upper Beaver Meadows — wide valley views, aspen edges, elk in the background in fall. Hidden Valley — forested and intimate when you want trees instead of panoramas.

When to go

September to early October is the sweet spot: golden aspens, calmer weather, and the elk rut — bugling elk behind your vows is a soundtrack money can't design. Winter at Sprague Lake is nearly private and wildly underrated. Summer works with sunrise ceremonies and morning discipline; afternoon storms and crowds are real.

The Estes Park pairing

The classic structure: morning ceremony in the park, celebration in Estes Park after — Della Terra, The Stanley Hotel, or a private cabin. One seamless film from mountain vows to dinner toasts. My full RMNP page covers how I shoot it.

Filming rules worth knowing

No drones, period — parkwide. Timelines get built around entry windows and light rather than against them. This is exactly the kind of federal red tape my process was built for; permit research comes with every package.
