Where to Elope in Colorado: 12 Locations Ranked by a Local

Adventure elopement couple in the Colorado high country

Every “best places to elope in Colorado” list is written by someone in Denver who visited twice. I live in Durango and film elopements in these mountains for a living — here's the honest ranking, with the access and permit notes the pretty lists leave out.

1. Ouray & Yankee Boy Basin

The Switzerland of America earns it. Waterfalls at the edge of Main Street, wildflower basins twenty minutes up a 4x4 road, and fewer crowds than anywhere this dramatic deserves. My Ouray guide.

2. Telluride & San Sophia Overlook

A box canyon with a gondola. San Sophia Overlook at 10,500 feet is the most cinematic ceremony deck in the state — book permits early. Telluride guide.

3. Molas Pass & Little Molas Lake

The San Juans classic: lake reflections, drive-up access off US-550, sunrise privacy. My backyard — 45 minutes from Durango. San Juans guide.

4. Maroon Bells

The most photographed mountains in North America. Sunrise only — the crowds arrive with the shuttles. Permits specify exact sites. Maroon Bells guide.

5. Rocky Mountain National Park

Sprague Lake and 3M Curve are designated ceremony sites with real permit structure — accessible alpine for guests of any mobility. RMNP guide.

6. Ice Lakes Basin

Turquoise water at 12,000 feet for couples willing to earn it on foot. The hike filters the crowds; the color looks unreal on film.

7. Dunton Hot Springs

Not a trailhead — a restored ghost-town resort you buy out for a weekend. The most extraordinary venue in Colorado. Dunton guide.

8. Red Mountain Pass

The Million Dollar Highway's most dramatic stretch. Crystal Lake reflections in the morning; aspen gold in late September.

9. Sapphire Point (Breckenridge)

Summit County's beloved overlook above Lake Dillon — easy access, 90-minute permit windows, books out a year ahead. Breckenridge guide.

10. Independence Pass (Aspen)

High-alpine pullouts at 12,000 feet — sunrise vows without the Bells' shuttle logistics.

11. Silverton

Historic mining town charm at 9,300 feet; pair town celebration with alpine vows the next morning.

12. Estes Park

The gateway-town option: RMNP vows, then dinner at a venue like Della Terra or The Stanley.

How to actually choose

Pick by season, guest count, and how far you'll walk — not by Instagram. July wildflowers point to Yankee Boy; late-September gold points to Red Mountain Pass or the Bells; guests over 60 point to Sprague Lake or Sapphire Point. Location shortlisting is included in every package — tell me your season and I'll narrow it to three. Check your date.
